Hand-Painting Kitchen Cabinets in Nether Heyford, Northamptonshire

Painted Kitchen in Benjamin Moore Scuff-X Tarrytown Green

We recently had the privilege of working on a beautiful project in the historic village of Nether Heyford. This was a special collaboration, where we were tasked with hand-finishing a brand-new installation by Bells of Northampton.

While Bells is known for world-class craftsmanship and joinery, the cabinetry provides the perfect canvas for a specialist finish. Our goal was to take this raw installation and give it a soul, creating a space that felt unique, luxurious, and ready for family life.

Why Hand-Paint a New Kitchen? A common question we get is: "Why hand-paint a new kitchen instead of having it sprayed in a factory?" The answer lies in the depth and character of the finish. A factory spray can sometimes look plastic or sterile. In contrast, a hand-painted kitchen has a subtle, organic texture. It catches the light in a way that sprayed furniture simply cannot, feeling authentic, bespoke, and timeless.

The Colour: Benjamin Moore Tarrytown Green The client wanted a statement colour—something with personality that wouldn't feel dated in a few years. We worked through our colour charts to find the perfect match for the space.

  • The Choice: Tarrytown Green by Benjamin Moore.
  • The Vibe: This is a deep, historic green. It is rich and moody but still feels welcoming, grounding the room and working beautifully with the natural light in the cottage.

The Material: Why We Use Scuff-X For this project, we used Benjamin Moore Scuff-X Eggshell. This is not just standard paint; it is a high-performance coating specifically designed for high-traffic commercial environments.

We choose to use it in residential homes for three key reasons:

  1. Durability: It resists scuffs and dings far better than traditional cabinetry paint.
  2. Washability: You can wipe it down without damaging the finish, which is essential for a busy kitchen.
  3. Finish: It dries to a beautiful, low-lustre eggshell sheen that looks sophisticated.

Our 5-Step Technical Process Even with brand-new wood, we never skip steps. To achieve a Revival Decor quality finish, we follow a strict process:

1. Protection and Masking We treat your home with respect. Before a brush touches a pot of paint, we mask off the floors, protect the worktops, and ensure the surrounding area is safe from dust or splatters.

2. Surface Preparation New wood is not always ready for paint immediately. We meticulously clean every inch of the cabinetry and sand the surface lightly. This "opens up" the grain, ensuring the primer will bond perfectly to the wood for a long-lasting finish.

3. Specialist Priming We apply a high-grip primer. This is the foundation of the paint system, sealing the wood and providing a solid base for the bold green colour.

4. The Hand-Painting Phase This is where the magic happens. We applied multiple coats of Tarrytown Green, sanding finely between every single coat. This step is crucial as it removes any tiny imperfections and creates that "soft-to-the-touch" feel that luxury furniture is known for.

5. The Hardware Upgrade A kitchen is not finished until the handles are on. The client chose premium hardware from Hendel & Hendel. The brass tones of the handles pop against the dark green paint, creating a stunning contrast. This is the "jewellery" that completes the look.

Location Spotlight: Nether Heyford We love working in Northamptonshire villages like Nether Heyford. Known for having one of the largest village greens in the country, it is a location full of character. It was a pleasure to help a local family improve their home right here in the county.
