We get a lot of requests to paint clients furniture, and it's proving more and more popular over recent years. We were contact by a client in Northampton who had a vintage sideboard that was in a very dark wood stained finish and no longer suited the style of their home after redecoration. They had their heart set on turning the dark wood sideboard into a more modern, navy blue piece. After our quote was accepted we provide a colour fan deck for the client to choose colours from and we painted out a couple sample boards of their favourites. The final decision was Benjamin Moore 'Gentleman's Grey' in a satin finish.

The Process of Painting Freestanding Furniture

When we paint freestanding furniture for clients, it's always completed off-site in our workshop, this minimises the disruption in the clients home as there's always a lot of sanding involved! Our 2-man team will come and collect the piece with the aim to return your newly finished furniture within the week. Our process for hand painting freestanding furniture is as follows:

  1. We number and remove all the doors and drawers along with their hardware.
  2. We then remove the existing finish, often by sanding and wood stripping when required.
  3. Everything is then filled including any holes and joins in the wood.
  4. Two coats of primer is then applied furniture with sanding in-between to give a nice flat surface to apply the top coats to.
  5. The following day a single coat is applied to the furniture and then it's lightly sanded ready for the final coat.
  6. The next day a second coat is applied.
  7. We then reassemble the furniture including the hardware and wrap the piece ready for delivery.
  8. Finally the piece is loaded onto the van and re-delivered to the clients home.

For a final touch on this project we were asked to refinish the hardware too, these were painted in a copper finish and were refitted once the doors and drawers were re-installed. It's not often we get the opportunity to refinish such ornate pieces however this was a project we were delighted to work on!
