Fitted Furniture Painting in Maidwell, Northamptonshire
Fitted Furniture Painting in Maidwell, Northamptonshire
Returning to the beautiful village of Maidwell in Northamptonshire, we were asked by a regular client to hand paint some MDF fitted furniture they have had made by a local carpenter. The client had wardrobes made by the carpenter in their bedroom which were spray painted by the carpenters own spray painters, however the client wasn't happen with the plasticky looking finish and the smell of the solvent based paint that was sprayed in their home and requested that we hand finish their new fitted furniture for them.
The new units were being installed in the clients laundry room, the units included a double wardrobe, built-in washing baskets along with a vanity table and solid wood worktops and shelving.
The Process of Hand Painting MDF Fitted Furniture
MDF is notoriously difficult to paint, it takes a lot of coats with sanding in between to get rid of those pesky fibres that rise up and to ensure a smooth finish. The client chose the colour 'Shaker Beige' from the Benjamin Moore range for this project. Our process for hand painting MDF fitted furniture is as follows:
- We number and remove all the doors and drawers fronts along with their hardware.
- We then mask up the edges of the furniture and cover the flooring with protection.
- Everything is then caulked and filled including any holes and joins in the wood.
- Two coats of primer is then applied frame with sanding in-between to give a nice flat surface to apply the top coats to.
- The doors are then taken back to the workshop to be primed and sanded too.
- The following day a single coat is applied to the frame and the doors.
- The next day a second coat is applied after we've given everything a light sand.
- We allow everything to dry before returning on the final day to unmask the frame and to reassemble the furniture. All the doors are re-hung and the hardware installed.
The Finished Project: A Traditionally Painted Laundry/Dressing Room
Once all the doors and drawers were reinstalled we gave the solid wood shelving a couple of coats of clear Osmo Oil to protect and bring out the grain of the wood. The natural wood along with the 'Shaker Beige' coloured units and the navy walls really worked well on this project, the client defiantly had a laundry/dressing room to envy!
